At Least I Didn't Starve: Don't Starve Gameplay Diary

-by Dayv

Don't Starve (by Klei Entertainment) officially came out last month, and everyone seems to be quite aware of its awesomeness.  Instead of doing a normal review and telling you about how great it clearly is, I figured I'd just keep some tabs on my playthrough to show off my gaming awesomeness.  Unfortunately the following is evidence to the contrary.

Day 1:
I seem to have woke up...somewhere, at the edge of a pine forest. By all rights would seem to be like any other, with trees, birds, and what look to be rabbits nearby, but I can't help but feel there is something sinister to it all. Surely it's nonsense, and I am just struggling to cope with my sudden change of surroundings.

-I've taken a closer look at the rabbits I saw earlier and, while I suppose they could still be called rabbits, they seem to have sprouted some kind of antennae. Otherwise they seem about as I'd expect wild rabbits to be, dumb and skittish.

-I started gathering sticks and tufts of grass, I'm not sure why exactly, but it seems to keep my mind off of this strange place. In my wandering, however, I have come across a cobble road. It is unclear where it leads, but perhaps I am not alone here after all. I'm not sure this gives me much comfort, however, and my underlying suspicions of malice have not subsided. I think I'll just stay off the road for now.

-As I continued my foraging, I stumbled upon something quite...unique. What at first seemed to be a discarded toupee,or maybe the droppings of some sort of hair-eating creature, on closer inspection seems to be the gaping maw of some kind of sedentary monster. As I neared, the hairy blob opened into massive needle-toothed mouth, but made no further movements. It seems fixed in the ground, and almost seems to expect that I leap into its mouth. I'm not sure how a creature like this could ever survive, much less grow so large, but I think I will keep my distance.

-My forest scrounging has not been unsuccessful. I've not only discovered some edible berries, but some flint as well which I have managed to combine with the sticks I've gathered into a crude axe. With my new tool I should be able to cut some wood for a fire, and perhaps gather some supper.

-Axe inadequate at gathering rabbits, further innovation required

-With my supply of wood and tender I have built a fire for the evening, but as the sun began to set and I was searching for a place to camp for the evening, I spied, luckily from across a river, a nest of what looked to be massive spider-creatures roaming about in the dark. After making sure to put significant distance between them and myself (on the off-chance they happen to be amphibious ), I set up a small camp for the evening,. As the sun sets, the darkness around me seems to be alive, almost malevolent. Perhaps it is still just some buried superstition, but regardless I doubt I will sleep tonight, perhaps I'll spend the evening tinkering with the things I've gathered.

Day 2:
In the night I have managed to fashion some of the grass I gathered into a makeshift outfit, for lack of other ideas. I have also used some more of the flint I found to create a pick, and hope to use it to find some sturdier building materials. And, perhaps if I can find just a little gold, I may be able to make something more significant...

-I was jumped by some sort of deranged turkey-creature while harvesting berries. It was quick, but stupid, and I managed to quickly outsmart it and finish it off with my axe. I will not go hungry tonight.

-I have found myself once more on a cobblestone road, and this time, with my tools at the ready, I decided to follow it. It has led me out of the forest and into a swamp where I have discovered a rather macabre artifact. It seems to be just a bone with an eyeball attached to one end, but...I swear I'd seen the eye move. Could this be some sort of living creature. I...wait, I think I heard something...

-This 'eyebone' seems to have drawn the attention of another nearby creature. While I was at first afraid it was attacking, it seems to be quite content just following me. I offered it a bit of the food I have scavenged, which it happily took, but on closer inspection it seems to be just storing the food inside its bulbous hollow body, undigested and even retrievable. It seems I have not only gained a companion, but a portable storage device. I think I'll call him 'Chester'.

-We have stumbled upon a village! Just as the sun was setting we made our way out of the swamp where several small shacks are arrayed as well as what looks to be some crude gardens. Whoever lives here, they all seem to have locked themselves inside for the evening, hinting that perhaps I am not alone in my fear of the dark. I have set up a fire nearby for Chester and I to wait out the evening.

Day 3:
Lacking new materials but not time, I spent the evening stringing together the flowers I collected yesterday into a garland. Though it was at first simply something to keep myself busy and my mind from the dark, I must admit it goes quite well with my grass shirt. I think I'll keep it.

-Upon sunrise the inhabitants of the village immediately awoke and began traipsing about, with minimal interest in myself or Chester, besides the occasional insistence that I not touch them. While I surly mean no insult to them, I can only describe them as bipedal pigs—stupid pig-faced creatures with fat, bulbous bodies and disgusting, hair-covered hunched backs.

-I have tried offering food to the homely villagers in hopes of making friends, but while my gifts were accepted and immediately eaten in front of me (and almost as quickly shat out), the pig creatures continue to show little interest in my presence. I have, with the help of Chester (who remains completely indifferent to whatever I place within him), collected some of their...waste in hopes of starting a garden of my own.

-Just south of the village I have managed to collect a small amount of stone. It is sadly less than I had hoped for to build anything significant, but it is a start. More interestingly, I have come across several well-weathered gravestones placed seemingly at random amongst the trees. Are these the burials sites of the pigmen's dead? Or perhaps the remains of something far older? Perhaps I'll investigate further when I'm sure the pigmen aren't watching.

-Not far from the gravestones I have stumbled upon a nest similar to the spider nest I previously spotted across the river. While there are none of the creatures about currently, I have no intention of remaining to confirm that they do reside here. Perhaps I will head north tomorrow.

Day 4:
I have created a slightly more permanent base near the pig village, opposite the swamp, but I still lack the materials for any serious tinkering.

-After some wandering, Chester and I have left the forests and come onto a wide prairie-land inhabited by some large cow-creatures. These 'Beefalo' as we've begun referring to them, seem to be quite plentiful defecators and I've managed to gather more fertilizer for our future garden, which Chester has been kind enough to hold onto. Beyond that I've kept my distance.

-Exploring the prairie we have come across an abandoned wooden fort. Inside I discovered what can only have been the remains of its previous inhabitants along with a few remaining supplies, including a crude wooden staff with a red gem set in one end, the gem was strangely hot to the touch. Though the staff intrigues me, I fear what could have slaughtered so many within a fortified position, and with the sun now setting I have no desire to remain in this place.

Day 5:
After sunrise and a meager breakfast, Chester and I have returned to the prairie to continue exploration. It seems the prairie is infested with the spider nests as well, but this one seems dormant like the last, perhaps they are only active at night. Whatever the case I fear these creatures may soon be a serious threat to my continued survival, and may need to be dealt with.

-Not far from the ruins of the fort we discovered yesterday, Chester and I found an even more disturbing site. It seems to be a ritual circle of some kind, adorned with the decapitated heads of four pigmen, set on poles at opposing corner. The purpose of the landmark is unclear, but on closer inspection the circle at its center, made from loose stone and debris, solidified into a singular large pedestal. Whatever it was for, we did not stay to find out.

-Our journey through the plains have not been all of horror. Chester and I have managed to procure more stone and even a small amount of gold. Though it isn't much, I think it may be just enough for a design I have been playing with, a sort of 'science machine' to help with further innovation.

-SUCCESS!

Dayv 6:
In the night I managed to assemble a machine of some description. It isn't the most attractive design, but I believe it will work for our purposes. With it I have already managed to set up a small farm plot along with a chest to store our provisions. I also think I may have the supplies necessary to create a new tool with the help of this new wonder,.

-With our new shovel in hand, Chester and I have returned to the southern forest, finally equipped to investigate the graves we had previously found. The first grave contained a large blue gem, though it's use or purpose are a mystery. Perhaps the other graves will help us figure something out.

-A ghost! Or something of the sort, from the grave, it appeared and came for us. I think it's gone, but...my god, I think it was a ghost! Chester and I are now safely back at camp, but only after a savage run through the woods. Whatever it was that we stirred from that grave, I do not think we will be returning.

-Trying to get my mind off of the day's 'adventures' I have done some more tinkering with the science machine. So far I have developed a simple trap, perhaps it will finally allow me to catch some of the local rabbits...for closer study. I have also had an idea for a way to better handle the meat I have been gathering besides simply searing it in the fire, but it will require some charcoal. The pine cones I planted previously seem to have grown rapidly, perhaps these new trees can be of use here, and this could be a perfect chance to test out the staff I found in the old fort the other day.

-In an attempt to create charcoal I may have caused a bit more damage then intended. The staff seemed quite capable of lighting a fire, and the fire seemed quite capable of spreading. Within only a few short moments, not only the tree I had planned to burn, but the entire lot of trees, along with a nearby villager garden, was alight. On the bright side, I now have a significant supply of charcoal.

Day 7:
I've used the charcoal I made last night to create a drying rack, but unfortunately I lack meats to dry. Chester and I have decided to investigate the nearby swamps for something worth eating.

-We have been beset by some kind of tentacle creature. It seems to be rooted in the ground, so I believe Chester and I may have the upper-hand.

...
...
...

Day 7?
-I awoke

...it's getting late it seems.

Where has the
day gone...where
am I?

My mind is
so fuzzy,

the last thing I remember is...
...wet, pain...
I seem to be in the prairie again, surrounded by...pig heads? I...am I...? The ritual circle, but the pedestal seems to have been shattered. What am I doing here? Where is Chester? Did I...no...impossible, surely I just dozed off, it has been so long since I've slept. But here of all places?

-Whatever has occurred, my mind has not come through it whole. The shadows are no longer just ominous, but I swear I can sense them moving, alive, malevolent. I must find Chester and return to camp. Hopefully he is also carrying my gear, as much of it seems to have gone missing.

-I have found Chester, along with much of my gear and supplies, sitting in the swamp, strewn about like the remains of some sort of violent struggle. Chester seems to be unharmed, though I'm not entirely sure what harm to his bizarre body would look like exactly. The shadows still flicker at the edge of my vision, seeming to solidify just out of sight, scurrying back to the abyss whenever I try to look at them. I have my fiery staff at the ready, just in case.

-I thought I was under attack, I swear it was coming for me, a shadow finally come to life, but as it began to burn I saw the horrified face of one of the pigmen. I don't blame it for attacking me after that, but luckily we have managed to settle the matter without either of us receiving serious injury, though I can't imagine it will help relations with the creatures. I need to get my mind on something, perhaps our garden has grown some since I've been gone, it would be nice to have something to do this evening besides watch the shadows.

Day 9:

-I find myself wandering aimlessly today, I fear my mind still continues to slip after my journey through
death's door (as I am beginning to believe it must have been). I finally dug up a few berry bushes with what I now wonder may have been a crazy idea of replanting them nearer to camp. Hopefully with a little fertilizer they'll grow again. Otherwise this was not a largely productive day.

-Just as it begins to grow dark I have come across the giant worm-creature from days past. I don't even remember coming this way but, it is a curious thing. It's mouth seems so deep, past the teeth it goes so much deeper, to some other place, far from here...

-I have made it back to camp, though I fear I nearly broke. Almost leaping onto the mouth of a giant monster worm was definitely one of my crazier notions. I need gain control of my mind before I do something insane. Tomorrow we will set out on the prairie and see what else there is to discover.

Day 10:
Chester and I have set out early, and we have already found something of interest. It seems to be the track of some strange animal, and from the looks of it a large one. I'm unsure how such a large creature has kept out of sight from us, but tracking it down may be just the task I need to rejuvenate my ailing mind.

-We continue to track the unknown creature, now along the eastern coast where the prairie gives way to the sea. Along the way I made note of several large spider nests, some of which seemed to have popped up in areas we have previously explored. These creatures may have to be dealt with if Chester and I are to ever feel any real sense of security.

-We have found it! After half a day's search we came upon what looks to be a shaggy, elf-eared elephant-creature. Though I am somewhat in awe of the creature's grandness, I can't help but think how long we might survive off of its ample meat.

-The beast is quite skittish for its size, and manages to stay well ahead of us at all times. If only I had thought to make some sort of ranged weaponry, from bee-stingers and hollow reeds perhaps.

-Spiders! The elephant-creature has trampled a spider's nest and seems to have stirred them. I have avoided the spiders so far, maybe I can scare the creature into running beyond the nest without drawing the spiders' attention.

It didn't work out
